A preoperative coronal and sagittal MR image of a 52-year-old woman shows subchondral BME in the medial femoral condyle. The greatest lateral (L = length) and cranial (W = width) extents were measured on coronal images and the greatest sagittal extent (D = depth) was measured on sagittal images. The volumes were calculated using the formula for a prolate ellipsoid: length × width × depth × π/6
